is Accra’s first purpose-built, fully equipped international Montessori Nursery established in August 1998.

We were accredited by the Montessori Centre International (MCI) in London UK in 2002 – the first school in West Africa to be awarded such status; once again, we achieved accreditation by the Montessori Evaluation and Accreditation Board (MEAB) London UK in March 2010.

We believe children are unique individuals and must be allowed to develop at their own pace in a carefully structured environment.

Our method……..

is truly child-centered; indeed everything is child-sized! We observe the individual child and direct him/her to material which will enhance and facilitate learning.

Emphasis is placed on the development of the whole child – emotionally, physically, socially, spiritually and intellectually.

Maria Montessori…….

was the first female doctor to graduate in Italy.

Initially working with retarded children, she realized they derived immense pleasure and fulfillment from touching objects in their environment.

She went on to develop special equipment and some of the children labeled ‘uneducable’ learned to read and write and passed exams with higher grades than the ‘normal’ children.

Her Casa dei Bambini or Children’s houses became internationally renowned with schools opening in places as widely separated as North America, Germany and India, to name a few.

There are now thousands of Montessori schools all over the world today.

We believe…………..

that young children learn best when given the freedom to carry out activities of their own choice in a carefully planned environment, under the gentle guidance of qualified staff.

At The Gingerbread House…………………

the children start by learning how to do up buttons, zips and fasteners and tying bows and laces to aid independence.

Pouring exercises aid dexterity and again independence, as children learn to pour juice during snack time for example.

They build towers and stairs to improve their perception of size and dimension and develop concentration, memory and matching skills through games and puzzles; they explore their world through globes and maps.

Sandpaper letters and numerals are traced with the finger in preparation for writing and the children become phonetically aware through games and eventually work their way through the reading series.

Children are fundamentally numerate right from the start and we build on their knowledge, taking them from identifying numbers right through to multiplication and division - using hands on and concrete material.

The children are vertically grouped in two classrooms - a Montessori room for a maximum of twenty-eight 2 to 4 1/2 year olds and a Kinder Class for a maximum of twenty-two 4 1/2 to 6 year olds.

The school is directed by an internationally qualified Montessori teacher with training credentials. Each classroom is led by a qualified teacher. The teaching assistants are locally qualified and very experienced.
