FHI 360 works alongside government agencies and nongovernmental organizations to improve Ghana’s education system and to support public and private health systems and services in the country.
FHI 360 recently become a key implementing partner for the Ghana Partnership for Education: Learning, a U.S. Agency for International Development project to support the early grade reading and literacy improvement activities implemented by the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service. Our education activities will help improve, expand and sustain learning outcomes for at least 2.8 million primary students nationwide, with a particular emphasis on children in kindergarten through grade three.
Since the mid-1980s, we have supported the Government of Ghana in implementing and Show more scaling up HIV prevention services to at-risk populations and in establishing a national HIV care and treatment system. We have also advanced access to and utilization of family planning services by testing the acceptability of new family planning methods, assessing the feasibility of community-based distribution of long-acting methods and exploring the role of private pharmacies in increasing the availability of the long-acting contraceptive Depo-Provera. FHI 360 has also played an instrumental role in advising the Ghana Health Service on its family planning policies and guidance.
The broad scope of our health portfolio has also included working with the public and private sector to improve prevention and effective treatment of malaria, particularly for pregnant women and children; piloting the integration of cardiovascular disease prevention and treatment into health systems; offering community-based management of acute malnutrition in children; assessing the quality of maternal and neonatal health care services; and managing neglected tropical diseases such as Buruli ulcer, filariasis, onchocerciasis and soil-transmitted helminthes in children and adults.
In addition, we have supported a number of important clinical, behavioral and operational research studies in Ghana. These have ranged from identifying better treatments for schistosomiasis to measuring HIV prevalence and risk behaviors among female sex workers and assessing the effectiveness of mobile health technologies (mHealth) in increasing access to emergency contraception.
