MEDEEM is an innovative program that offers a sustainable solution to bridge the gap between informal land holdings and formal land registration. The name MEDEEM comes from the Ghanaian Twi phrase "mi din mu" which translates to "in my name". This phrase captures the purpose of the program - to provide legal recognition and empowerment to the poor by formally connecting them to land rights. MEDEEM utilizes GIS technologies and a hybrid business model to provide an affordable way for the poor to formalize their land rights. Unlike traditional "top down" land registration programs that have often been unsuccessful in serving the needs of the poor, MEDEEM takes a private-sector led approach to drive change from the bottom up, one parcel at a time.
